under construction

With a focus on the rural landscape and changing feel of the site through the seasons we have been working with a family to create a unique home near Longview, Alberta.  The surrounding landscape and the elemental forms and rationale of rural buildings were reinterpreted to develop this project.

The siting and final form of the house came from an analysis of the views and the desire for sun in specific spaces at certain times throughout the day and the year.  From their location there are expansive views in all directions and we also placed windows to frame the surrounding landscape.  The simple strategies of room, window and form placement on the site also contribute to the overall sustainable goals of this project.  The house opens up to the south and east to greet the sun which is especially welcome in the winter months.  An open stairway was located at the centre of the plan with a direct connection to an outdoor space and to the south sun.  The house is nestled in a grove of trees to the north and west which protects the house from the prevailing winds.

Here are the original model images and the latest construction photos.

Our most sustainable house yet is currently under construction.  This house has been designed to incorporate geothermal heating , solar thermal and  solar electric power, underground cistern locations, and spray foam insulation.  The roofs in particular have been designed at the optimal angle for solar collection with eaves used to maximize solar shading.  We are currently at the framing stage, check back for updates.

on a whim, quick to Las Vegas.  New (world class) Architecture.  The City center development with buildings by Lebeskind, Foster, and Helmut Jahn.  Artwork by Dennis Hopper, Tony Cragg, Dale Chihuly, even a Henry Moore.  Check out these photos below.  Does this prove that contemporary architecture is purely a style or theme ( like Robert Venturi describes in “Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture”) or is this development something more than the other hotel/casinos putting forth European experiences?  Perhaps, this showcases how far “contemporary” architecture has come from “modern” architecture?  Less is a bore.city center

RPA on Tour

February 22nd, 2010

Hello from Palm Springs! We have had a very inspiring visit and have been really intrigued by both the architecture here and the desert landscape. Our visit to Lautner’s Elrod House was really spectacular. We were able to see the house transition from day to evening and the light was beautiful. The house felt more like a landscape than a residence as the transitions from the interior to exterior were seamless. Another highlight was our quick, very quick, day trip to Las Vegas. You may not think that this could be a locale for the latest modern architecture, but the new City Centre hotel was really dynamic. There are some great new ideas and beautiful spatial experiences in that collection of buildings. The Crystals project was definitely a highlight. Check back for photos once we return!
